The 8th National Congress of the SMLTSA took place in Cape
Town from the 2/9/1986 to the 5/9/1986.
All who participated will agree that this congress was a huge success in all
aspects. One of the largest held ever with a total of 841 registrants, 111
lectures and 45 posters of a high academic standard. The event will be
remembered for its smooth organisation, excellent venue and outstanding trade
exhibition with 32 participating companies. The organisers managed to create a
feeling of friendliness and comradeship which has never been seen before amongst
South African Medical Technologists. The congress was officially opened by the
then Minister of Health and Population Development, Dr W.A. van Niekerk, who
emphasized the essential role of Medical Technologists as part of the healthcare
team. The social functions included a train journey and supper at Franchoek, an
English Pub Evening and an official Banquet. The organising committee were
members of the Cape Town and Tygerberg branches of the SMLTSA, namely Mr M.
Findlay, Mr J. de Wit, Ms A. Schincariol, Mr J. Partridge, Ms P. Raad and Dr W.
van Rijswijk.
