CPD Update!
As from 1 January 2004 CPD for Medical Technologists/Technicians will undergo a few changes.
Firstly the total points required will be reduced from 50 to 30. Points for full- and part-time employment will fall away.
The present 5 categories be reduced to only three namely: 1. Clinical, 2 Non-Clinical and 3 Ethical.
The present period based system (PBS) of one year be replaced by a continuous point system (CPS). In this new system any points obtained will be valid for a period of two years. For example, if a practitioner attends a meeting on 3 May 2004 and accumulates 5 points, those points will be valid until 2 May 2006, after which it will fall away. Then if he/she attends another meeting on 6 June and obtain 6 points and those points will be valid until 5 June 2006 etc. All the points to a maximum of 60 accumulated up to March 2004 will be transferred to the individual practitioners account, and half those points will expire on 31 December 2004 and the other half on 31 December 2005. It will thus mean that a minimum of 60 points must be in the account of that practitioner at any one time, of which a minimum of 4 points must be in ethics.
Any point accumulated during the period 1 January 2004 up until 31 March 2004
will count toward 2003/2004 as well as for 2004/2005.
This system will prevent practitioners from obtaining all their points in one month and the attendance of CPD activities will become truly continuous.
Providers of activities must send a list of names of persons attending activities, WITH ACTIVITY NUMBERS AS WELL AS HPCSA REGISTRATION NUMBERS to the Office of the SMLTSA. This must be done within a week of the activity taking place. The Office will do the rest. Therefore one will not have to send your whole portfolio to the office once a year.
