Obiturary - Donald Alexander

It was with great sadness that we learnt of the passing of Donald Alexander on the 27th December, 2017.

Donald, who was known to many as “Mr SMLTSA” was the Office Administrator of SMLTSA, at the Head office in Cape Town for almost 20 years. He had retired from this position in 2015.
Donald was a long-standing member of the Society and staunch supporter of the profession of Medical Technology; he was qualified in the field of Haematology and worked in the Haematology department at Groote Schuur Hospital, Cape Town before taking up the position at SMLTSA.
He will be fondly remembered as the calm voice behind so many examination queries and has given advice to hundreds of students over the years.
During his time at SMLTSA, he oversaw many changes within the profession including the increased number of students writing examinations due to the addition of many more new categories and disciplines, and was involved in the organization thereof.

He had an amazing memory and had knowledge of so many members of the Society over the years.
He sponsored a Haematology award at our bi-annual Laboratory Congresses and it has been decided to continue this award in his name as a remembrance of his dedication to his profession.

As President of SMLTSA, and on behalf of the Executive Committee and Medical Technology Profession, we wish to offer our sympathies to all his family at this time.

RENEWAL of Current & Application for NEW MEMBERSHIP Form

Medical Laboratory Professionals Day
15 April 2018

The Society of Medical Laboratory Technologists of SA wishes to remind all our colleagues in the Profession of Medical Technology that whilst strikes may be a negotiated event between laboratory management and a Union, at all times, it is important to remember that we are part of an essential service with a duty towards the patients whose samples we are processing.
We are also governed by a Code of Conduct when registered under the auspices of the HPCSA.
Hence, whilst the strike or protest action may be legal , the behaviour whilst striking should not include harassment, destruction of property or any sort of violence or criminal behaviour.
